Why was a bubble-bee digging in the dirt? What are they doing?

I noticed holes in the dirt and when I looked more closely, I saw bees digging and making holes. Why do they do this? Why was a bubble-bee digging in the dirt? What are they doing?
This is a good site to visit.

It will answer your question and provide many more answers for you about the bumblebee. Why was a bubble-bee digging in the dirt? What are they doing?
Some species of bumble bees actually nest in the ground; so do some species of wasps, hornets and bees.

My guess, and it's only a guess, is that the critter was considering building a home there.
Making a nest in the ground thats what they do.
