What is the biggest bee in North America?

I live on the east coast (not near the water). In the last two years, I have seen the biggest bees in my life. Their bodies appear to be the size of my thumb - the bee is perhaps a little bit smaller than a cicada, but much more calculated and scary. What kind of bee might this be and how common is it? How dangerous is it!?What is the biggest bee in North America?
The carpenter bee is the largest bee here in the Midwest. They can be found over most of America. They are harmless. However if you mess with them you will regret it. And you should know whether you have any kind of bee or wasp allergy.
