Is it true that when male bees climax during mating, they explode and leave thier genitals inside the female?

my friend said she learned this in a fourth year zoology lectureIs it true that when male bees climax during mating, they explode and leave thier genitals inside the female?
This is both true and not true.

There can be little doubt that a huge amount of pressure is exerted by the drone bees muscles, as it causes him to flip entirely off the queen bee. One of the major authors in the field described it figuratively as exploding sperm into the queen. And there is no doubt that the drones genitals break off and he dies within hours due to massive trauma. So it's not like there's a huge or visible explosion or anything.

The genitals are not even jammed in the queen... other males just pull the thing out, mate, and die themselves. A queen will typically mate with (and kill) between 7-10 drones, and sometimes up 17 or more. The queen has internal sacs that can store a volume of semen that would take eight drones to fill, so presumably anything after that is just for fun (for the queen).

Now, although there is no evidence in the literature of the 'explosion' of climax being much more violent than a breaking off of the genitals, I have heard accounts from beekeepers who have said that they can -hear- drones 'pop' when they mate. Though I haven't pursued this myself so I couldn't tell you if this is really so.

The second link below shows drawings from Winston's famous book, including those of mating, so you may want to check it out.Is it true that when male bees climax during mating, they explode and leave thier genitals inside the female?
you sicko
true ..and the queen can mate several times before she returns to the hive, often with the male genitalia dangling.
OMG..LOL
HHHHHHHaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Can't breath OMG that is the funniest thing i have heard for a while.
You should see when they ';gang stang'; a female bee. They shoot honey everywhere.
wow and i thought stinging sucked !
Probably, and when they sting they leave the sting in you and die, or is that a wasp?
i can get this as i have slept with many women who are similar to queen bees and i have felt like i have left my privates behind when they have been to ruff with me.
They do not explode..

They do often tear their genitals off and die...

I am glad I am not a bee....
Reading all the answers I've just learned more about bees then ever before....good question!
that a lowed of b- locks
No way
Siht! Does that mean I'm a bee?
During ejaculation, the male falls back and his endophallus is ripped out of his body and remains attached to the queen. The emasculated drones die very quickly with their abdomens burst in this fashion. Therefore the male bee just drops dead, they do not explode. Only the abdomen does.
oh yes ... oh yes ... oh yes ... oh yes ...oh yes ... oh yes ...oh yes ... oh yes ...oh yes ... oh yes ...oh yes ... oh yes ...oh yes ... oh yes ...oh yes ... oh yes ...oh yes ... oh yes ...oh yes ... oh yes ...oh yes ... oh yes ...oh yes ... oh yes ...oh yes ... oh yes ...oh yes ... oh yes ...oh yes ... oh yes ...oh yes ... oh yes ...oh yes ... oh yes ...oh yes ... oh yes ... aaaaaaahhhhhh

What are ';The birds and the bees';?

Are they animals? What are ';The birds and the bees';?
The birds and the bees'; (sometimes expanded to ';the birds, the bees and the butterflies'; or ';the birds, the bees, the flowers, and the trees';) is an idiomatic expression which refers to courtship and sex, and is usually used in reference to teaching someone, often a young child, about sex and pregnancy. The phrase is evocative of the metaphors and euphemisms often used to avoid speaking openly and technically about the subject.

Is the sudden lack of Honey Bees as dire as Global Warming? or worse?

This year is different. They're gone. 1/3 of USA food supply affected this fall. which is worse? Is the sudden lack of Honey Bees as dire as Global Warming? or worse?
I live in AZ where 90% of the honey bees are now africanized bees...don't miss them. I will miss the fresh fruit and veggies tho!Is the sudden lack of Honey Bees as dire as Global Warming? or worse?
No. It's some insect rights group sabotaging the honey supply so 'the poor bees won't feel exploitated'. But like typical liberal idiotic reasoning, they poisoned the bee hives to do it.
It is bad that is for sure.
The africanized bees are better pollenators and honeymakers. The problem is that they are not domesticated, and are extremely aggressive.

Today here is sunny, warm, neither windy nor rainy and there are NO bees making my blooming trees hum. None.
Remember that there were no honeybees before white settlers came to the U.S. These are european honeybees. Plants can also become pollinated by wind, hummingbirds, butterflies, and moths, although bees are better at it for crops because the farms are usually very large. There are also a good number of commercial facilities that routinely raise new bee colonies (and can make queens) indoors, and I presume they are ramping up production even higher this year to replace lost colonies.

There is some thinking that an insecticide is causing the bees to get lost and not make it back to the hive, which would be good news in that eliminating the pesticide should straighten things out quickly, but organic farms are also losing bees, so it casts doubt on the insecticide theory.

At any rate, I would guess this to not be as serious as global warming.
It's got more to do with varroa mites and invading African bees than global warming. My uncle raised honey bees for years, finally cut his losses and quit because the mites were decimating his hives. Around here, there's a few beekeeps who will bring hives to your cotton fields to pollenate, talked to one of the guys about bringing some hives for my orchard, he's been having problems with African bees killing off his European honey bees and taking over the hives.

I'm so retarded, I misread the question thinking you were asking if the lack of bees was a result of global warming. This is what I get for answering questions at 3 am.

They are called Mud Daubers. They do sting but are non agressive. Dont want to make them mad there sting is like that of a wasp tho.
    it could be a dragonfly
I think that would be a cicada. You will hear them, in the fall of the year, making a very high pitched noise. If you look around on tree trunks you'll see empty shells where they've moulted. My mother always said when you hear the first cicada scream it will be six weeks until the first frost. You should be hearing them soon.

They can also lay dormant under ground for seven years. Last year was supposed to be a bumper crop for them

What's the best thing to put on a bee sting, to get the stinger out?

Can you use tabacco from a cigarette? What's the best thing to put on a bee sting, to get the stinger out?
Just use a tissue and wipe it out opposite to the direction that it went into the skin. Then apply an ice pack to the area. If the redness increases see a doctor as you might need an antihistomine type medication. What's the best thing to put on a bee sting, to get the stinger out?
flick the stinger out immediatly using a flat edged object coming from the underside of it. Any sort of pressure of force from the side or top will make it inject more poison in. Give the spot your chewed wet tobacco or a splash of vinegar as it neutralizes the toxins and take a single dose of Benadryl to counteract the histamins. If you notice a difficulty in breathing anytime in the next 20 minutes get to the emergency room quick for an Epi shot and let them know you took some benadryl so they don't double dose you.
I've never heard of using tobacco.

I used to be a beekeeper (3 hives). The best thing to get the stinger out if it is still in your skin is to take a sharp flat object (credit card, etc) and scrape it over the skin. Angle it away from the site. Be very careful NOT to squeeze the bottom (top as you look at it) of the stinger. It has a gland that is most likely still attached and contains the toxin. That is the bee sting component that you react to. That's why tweezing is bad , it causes more to be pumped into the wound before you get the stinger out. The gland will continue to pump the toxin in even after it's removed from the bee.

To handle the swelling and pain, I used to mix a paste of MSG (the meat tenderizer) and put it on the wound. It breaks down the proteins in the venom.

Monitor yourself after the sting. If your fingers start to swell get your rings off and get to an ER. If you have difficulty breathing get to an ER. Thell them you are suffering from anaphalactic shock. Believe me, they will take you RIGHT away! I got stung on the neck one day by several bees. I had to go to the ER and that ended my 5 years of beekeeping.

I found a neat page from the medical journal The Lancet

that has pictures (and pretty much the same thing I just said)

    http://bees.ucr.edu/stings.html
Scratch it out. NEVER PULL IT OUT. It realeases more poison.

As for the tobacco, I have never heard of this ever.
Oh good grief...alternative medicine is something else at least on this one. Try ammonia or webmd

    Some say an onion..
No do not use tabacco from a ciggerett use only clean tabacco or talk to the pharmisist or to a local drug store.

    Hope it helps!

Why is The Talk referred to as ';The Birds and the Bees';?

What is it about the birds and the bees? Why don't parents just tell their kids what sex is instead of calling it weird names? Why is The Talk referred to as ';The Birds and the Bees';?
I am very open with my kids. I use correct terms and I don't tell lies. I do however only tell them what they ask for, I don't offer additional information.

As for the actual terms and where it came from, this is what I found on the net, not sure if it helps or not...

';Where exactly ';the birds and the bees'; originated nobody knows, but word sleuths William and Mary Morris hint that it may have been inspired by words like these from the poet Samuel Coleridge: ';All nature seems at work ... The bees are stirring--birds are on the wing ... and I the while, the sole unbusy thing, not honey make, nor pair, nor build, nor sing.'; Making honey, pairing ... yes, we can definitely tell what Sam had on his mind.

';The Morrises offer the theory that schools in years past taught about sex by ';telling how birds do it and how bees do it and trusting that the youngsters would get the message by indirection.'; Right. Luckily for the perpetuation of the species, there's always been Louie in the schoolyard to explain how things really worked';.

HTHWhy is The Talk referred to as ';The Birds and the Bees';?
i think the situation of having to talk to kids about sex is very difficult for parents...and its easier to talk about it in metaphor
Well, the larger question about why parents don't tell their kids about sex without having to use weird euphemisms is that we're way too puritanical about sex in America. People get the willies when they talk about their willies, so they have to find other ways to talk about it...

As for why it's called ';the birds and the bees';, it's from a Cole Porter song called ';Let's Do It';. Considering Cole Porter's own shady personal sex habits, it's kind of ironic.

Here are the lyrics, if you care:

    Let's Do It

    (Cole Porter)

    When the little bluebird

Who has never said a word

    Starts to sing Spring

    When the little bluebell

At the bottom of the dell

Starts to ring Ding dong Ding dong

    When the little blue clerk

In the middle of his work

Starts a tune to the moon up above

It is nature that is all

Simply telling us to fall in love

And that's why birds do it, bees do it

    Even educated fleas do it

Let's do it, let's fall in love

Cold Cape Cod clams, 'gainst their wish, do it

    Even lazy jellyfish do it

Let's do it, let's fall in love

I've heard that lizards and frogs do it

    Layin' on a rock

They say that roosters do it

With a doodle and a cock

Some Argentines, without means do it

I hear even Boston beans do it

Let's do it, let's fall in love

    When the little bluebird

Who has never said a word

starts to sing Spring spring spring

    When the little bluebell

At the bottom of the dell

Starts to ring Ding ding ding

    When the little blue clerk

In the middle of his work

    Starts a tune

The most refined lady bugs do it

    When a gentleman calls

Moths in your rugs they do it

What's the use of moth balls

The chimpanzees in the zoos do it,

    Some courageous kangaroos do it

Let's do it, let's fall in love

I'm sure sometimes on the sly you do it

Maybe even you and I might do it

Let's do it, let's fall in love

The birds and the bees, to the point!?

I just want to know what birds and bees have to do with sex? Why do people refer to them when they talk about it, I just want a simple explination. I know about sex so you don't have to explain that, I just want to know the symbolization of the birds and bees. Please. The birds and the bees, to the point!?
I believe you are asking where the Term ';The Birds and the Bee's'; came from, Right?

    This is what I found.

Several sources give credit to the great Cole Porter for coining the phrase. One of the legendary musician's more famous songs was ';Let's Do It.'; The 1928 standard contains the lyrics:

Birds do it, bees do it

    Even educated fleas do it

Let's do it, let's fall in love

World Wide Words goes on to explain that the first ';explicit use of the phrase'; didn't occur until 1939. An article on filmmaking from the Freeport Journal Standard stated: ';A Frenchman was born sophisticated: he knows about the birds and the bees.'; Hey, hey -- vive la France!

The Straight Dope believes poet Samuel Coleridge was the likely originator. His poem, the cheerfully titled ';Work Without Hope,'; opens with:

All Nature seems at work. Slugs leave their lair--

The bees are stirring--birds are on the wing--

In other words, when the birds start moving and the bees start grooving, it's on like Donkey Kong.

While there's no real consensus on how the term came about, most folks cite Mr. Porter.

How to keep the bees out . . .?

my little brother is deathly allergic to most types of bees, wasps and hornets. unfortunately they like to make a home in our home during the winter. what's a good way to keep them out of my house and away from my brother? How to keep the bees out . . .?
If wasps are making their nest inside your house, they must be finding a way in somewhere. You'll need to have someone inspect the outside of the house thoroughly to find out where they are getting in, and close off access. You can start with putting a fine wire mesh across all vents that lead outside.

I have a bee problem. How can I locate the hive?

There are two large (8-9 feet tall), non-flowering bushes that adorn the outside stairway to my apartment building. There is one nearby tree, also. And there are flying insects EVERYWHERE! Mainly bumblebees and wasps (some yellow jackets)...although I see a few honey bees every once in a while. I can't walk outside my front door without having to dodge something flying by. I remember a small problem last year, but I can't remember if it lasted throughout the entire summer. But it wasn't nearly as bad as it is now. They're quite the kamikaze sort, and I'm afraid one will fly inside my home or inside my vehicle. How can I locate the hive and have someone take care of the problem?I have a bee problem. How can I locate the hive?
you can calmly look into these bushes for what appears to be a ';mud football'; if they are bald faced hornets. If it's not the above, You'll see where the bees/wasps are going in and out of the enterance to the nest. Some people are allergic to these stings and can be very dangerous-lethal. Your property management would probably like to know of this situation. I would recommend hiring a pest control professional to treat this problem. Good luck, JohnI have a bee problem. How can I locate the hive?
I would probably say the bushes themselves attract the insects. If you truly had a hive nearby the house, I am sure the amount of bees would be VERY noticeable.

Is it practical to make the servants wear bee hives on their heads purly for entertainment purposes ?

I think this would prove to be most amusing seeing them go about their duties around the manor terrified of being stung, and it would also have the added benefit of improving their posture (The slouching oafs) Not to mention fresh honey on my morning toast. Is it practical to make the servants wear bee hives on their heads purly for entertainment purposes ?
Hmmm, this is a difficult one Rotter as those bee stings could swell the eyes shut so when it comes to the hired help serving morning brekkers they could drop the Edwardian china, which then means at least thirty good lashes with the horse whip and are you really up for that kind of exertion so early in the A.M.?Is it practical to make the servants wear bee hives on their heads purly for entertainment purposes ?
Serves two purposes: entrtainment and decor. A very utilitarian idea. What do you think about having pythons wrapped around the necks of the same servants. Would keep them alert, don't you think?

Consider abolish ladders as well. To polish those crystal chandeliers in the main hall, have them climb on each other's shoulders -- the sight of teetering footmen does so much to drive away ennui, don't you think?
A very good idea and very original too, but no, i don't think it is

practical. You see, that would be too cumbersome.

Far easier to put the bees inside their clothes so they remain

concealed from the sight. Only you will have to glean the honey

    from their undergarments.

But then i tell you this is far better than having to collect honey

from their hair and separating it from the dandruff.
I was thinking of the bee hive hair style back in the 50's maybe. You meant actual bee hives. Well since there is a bee shortage, you might have a plan there. I could use some bees for my garden, so I would hire one of your servants just to walk around the garden. I am not sure it would help the posture though. They would have to watch where they walk so they don't fall over.
Entertaining AND practical. A great idea!

Additionally you might consider attaching a 2nd hive to their backsides - rather like a bustle - thus ensuring they can't sit down.

This would be simultaneously funny and a deterrent to laziness.

An elegant solution. I hope you agree.
Well, it worked for Dusty Springfield, so worth a try! Oh!!!!! You meant a real bee hive and not the hair do! Silly me! But then, I am but a female.
not practical at all. your servants will get stung, maybe have allergic reactions leading to death then you wont have any servants...although it may be fun to watch it is not practical
Very practical. It's also necessary to cover them in pollen and tie them up a tree next to a hornets nest. Problem is, how can we be sure spectators are safe?
If it's only for entertainment purposes then it's very sarcastic, indeed.
listen pal, you said you'd pay me for this, and I have yet to have the 拢200 you promised!
    ONLY if they are allergic...

Please provide me with the link(s). Thank youWhere can i find a video tutorial on how to play flight of the bumble bee?
Here's a multi-media presentation. It's more just about the piece and playing it on piano.

http://joy2learn.org/piano/section.php?c鈥?/a>Where can i find a video tutorial on how to play flight of the bumble bee?
Who cares? Get the sheet music and learn to play it. It should only take a few months to get it down.
You should just get the music for it and learn it. A video won't teach you to play it. I'm sure you already know how it sounds. There really aren't tutorials for that. You just need to practice.

Did your parents tell you about the birds and the bees or did you learn for yourself?

    LOL. I'm still waiting for my mother to tell me......she always said ';I'll tell you when you're old enough to know'; whenever I asked questions she didn't want to answer! I'm still waiting! She couldn't bring herself to tell me about periods either and when mine started when I was 11yrs of age she thrust a medical journal on my lap and said ';Read that!'; No, I definately had to learn the hard way. Tc also had to learn for himself. The problem for us was that parents didn't talk about that sort of thing. We made a conscious effort with our kids and if they were old enough to ask the question they were old enough to know the answer....we took into account their ages at the time and told them enough without scaring them. Our 17yr old daughter was 8yrs of age when we told her about the birds and the bees due to her, then 15yr old, sister being pregnant. She had asked her sister how the baby had got into her tummy and her sister didn't want to tell her. lol. She was quite matter-of-fact about it but she made us laugh when she turned to her sister and said ';Did YOU know that!!';

ps...yes our other daughter DID know that!Did your parents tell you about the birds and the bees or did you learn for yourself?
lived on a farm.Did your parents tell you about the birds and the bees or did you learn for yourself?
Got my edjukayshun out behind the barn.
A little bit from friends, some from school and the rest from that little book it seems we all were given.
i learned that at a very young age........

bees string me and birds crap on me. now i'm a keeper of them both.......
When I was nearly 12 my mom gave me one of those books, told me to read it and ask if I had questions. She wasn't real comfortable answering questions. I learned more from the health classes at school.
they told me. but i already knew.

    late night HBO specials. lol
A little bit of both... my parents gave me the watered down version but I learned all the cool tricks on my own... LOL
i used to sleep in my parents bed when i was young. one night i woke up and saw my dad on top of my mom, but they had clothes on so i didn't really mind. i asked my mom about it the next morning but she said my dad was helping her scratch an itch. i only found out what was really going on during a sex ed class in fourth grade.
I saw the birds and bees out romping one day and then I knew.
My friends told me about it and then I got the talk from my Mum. I was grossed out and remember not wanting to talk about it and saying ';Yeah I know about that stuff'; and that was it.
    They gave me a book, ';On Becoming a Woman';
my dad was my only parent who could tell me and he did not. I learned from friends.
I learned myself....but I tend to take refresher courses every other day.....
I went to the library and read up on the subject, the activities of our natural friends has always been a passion for me and my parents had no need to instruct me on this fascinating area. The arrival of my own children came of course as no surprise but how the wife always got to the gooseberry bushes before me is a complete mystery.perhaps her friend the milkman helped.
    A little bit.

    But not enough...

and I'm trying now not to repeat their mistakes with my own children ...

I hope to succeed it, but it's not very easy.
I too had a combination of sources. The '4th grade health talk', a booklet from our family doctor when I was about 10 years old. Books I found while babysitting...;).

One of my fondest memories is the time both my parents sat me down for 'the talk'. I was 12 years old, developing rapidly, and the older boys had started to come around the house. My parents discussed values and morals, and their belief that sex was for marriage....but they also told me about protection. My dad started telling me about 'condoms'.....he asked if I knew what they were. I thought for a minute ';condoms, condoms?'; Then I said ';Oh, you mean rubbers!'; The shocked look on my parents' faces is still vivid in my mind. When they asked how I knew about them, I told them about the time my girlfriends and I bought some and used them as water balloons. I think my parents were relieved. One thing my dad told me during this talk stuck with me......there is no way to prevent getting pregnant or a disease that is 100%, except not having any sex. ';Don't do it unless you are prepared to have that man in your life forever.'; The older I got, the wiser that advice seemed to me. That talk happened nearly 40 years ago, I was very blessed to have parents who were able to talk to me together.
I learnt from school and going to the science museum, but learnt most from teenage magazines' agony pages!
My parents? Are you kidding? LOL. I remember finding a

medical book in a storage cupboard at home, and it had some info on the reproductive system and some other related

subjects (ahem). Well instead of allowing me to read it, I

found it missing when I went back to read more. I knew it be-

longed to my mother, so I'd put it back each time I was done

reading. I never said a word to her about the book, or that it

came up missing. I guess she wanted to keep me naive for

    as long as possible?

But little did she know, that one day in school, our class in

Home Ec. had to sit and watch a Disney cartoon film about

women and the reproduction system and how babies are

made. So I did learn about everything clinical in an easier to

understand form. By 7th grade kids were already telling dirty

jokes, which I still didn't have an understanding of. I still re-

member the first joke I heard, about a bull and the punch line.

Too bad I can't remember how the joke went. LOL. I just

remember it had something to do with a farmer trying to keep

a bull away from his cow. The kids really laughed hard on

that one. And I laughed along with them. Not really knowing

what the heck was going on LOL. So little by little I pieced

the technical stuff together and got the gist of things. Back

when I grew up, you didn't discuss things with your parents

like that. I don't know who was supposed to teach us. Mine

never did. I would probably have just died, had mom tried.

But actually, I learned later in life, she really didn't know alot

herself LOL. And yet, she did have three children. I guess

most women, just followed the natural order of things back

    then.
I read a lot as a kid and learned from novels first.

Later I learned the more scientific stuff from medical books and dictionaries.

By the time my mom tried to tell me about it I'd known a lot for years, and in some ways probably knew more than her.
Father, Mother, older Sister, clergymen, teachers, Aunts, Uncles, scout leaders, etc., COULD HAVE helped me develop a simple, healthy awareness of my human sexuality, but none of them did.

So, I learned it by reading and watching and trial and error...

(and trial, and trial, and .... ohhhh, I Loved those Trials, and even the Errors were pretty good, too !!! ;-)
my mom handed me a book opened to a chapter, said, read this, and let me know if you have questions.
    My mom told me.
I found out on the playground right before that ';talk'; in school. My best friend told me about it and I didn't believe her.

My mother was ';waiting'; until I turned 12. She waited too long.
I learned for myself by a mix of experimenting, finding my dad's porn collection, and reading books.
My mom was quite shy and I am sure she didn't know how to approach it. I had a girlfriend who babysat for a doctor, in the 6th or 7th grade I think, we were about 12. I helped her baby sit sometimes, and we went thru the doctor's medical books and learned everything we wanted to know, and then some!

We were pretty smug because we knew the REAL stuff. But we did learn it right.

After that, I learned a lot more first hand, by observation, growing up on a farm, I realized what I was looking at when I saw the bull in the field with the cows!
My brother told me before my parents had a chance. I was way to young, and could not understand how it could possibly take place.
My parents told me nothing at all, still wont talk about sensitive subjects to this day.
My parents told me absolutely nothing about the birds and bees. I wish that they would have, as it would have saved me alot of bad decisions, and critical mistakes in my earlier years. I DID learn I would not make the same mistake with my daughter, and she in turn, returned the favor with my 2 grandaughters. I feel that education in regards to the ';Birds and Bees'; definitely needs to be injected with a strong dose of moral standards, which seems to be lacking not only in this generation, but many previous.
One day I came home from school and there was a copy of the book ';Where did I come from'; sitting in my room.

At dinner that night Dad asked :

    ';Did you see that book I dropped in your room Son?';

    ';Yes.';

    ';Any questions';

    ';No';

    ';OK then. Pass the potatoes.';

That was it...it was never discussed again!!!!!

My bumble bee cichlid has a couple of yellow white spots on the bottom of its fin, and my electric blue does 2

they are yellow dots on the bottom fins, Is it a boy or girl if it has the dots, are they eggs?My bumble bee cichlid has a couple of yellow white spots on the bottom of its fin, and my electric blue does 2
No Ryan, that is not ick. That is called egg spots. It's not a clear indicator if it's a male or female though. There are females that have egg spots too. Usually males have them and large numbers, but like I said, females can have them too. The best way to sex your cichlids accurately is to vent them, though this is difficult. The next best thing I'd say is to look up the specifics on a cichlid forum that explains how males and female should appear and go with that. I have been able to accurately sex my Electric yellows, Ps. Flavus, and Taiwan Reefs doing that.

    FOLLOW UP.

Guy I agree somewhat, but I'm sorry bud, and most anyone on here that works with Africans like us is going to tell you, egg spots are a false way to sex cichlids by. I've got females that have them, some even more then my males. Though it does work sometimes, the point I am trying to make is venting is considered to be the most reliable method, then the fins and colors. My bumble bee cichlid has a couple of yellow white spots on the bottom of its fin, and my electric blue does 2
Thanks Fred, but the man just below me there is the one that taught me most everything I know, that's why I asked him to chime in on this one. Report Abuse

No, they are not eggs. They are, however called ';egg spots';.

Jon V is right, the egg spots are not a fail safe way to sex cichlids. I have had males with very few spots and females with quite a few. The only guarantee is to ';vent'; them and only if you know how to recognize the difference between males and females. You should also know how to handle fish before attempting to remove them from the water and look at their vents. Damaging their slime coating will allow bacteria and parasites an entry into their bodies where otherwise they would not be able to gain a foothold and damage your fish.

Both males and females can have the spots, so don't rely totally on the spots to determine sex. With some of the Africans you can notice a slight hump on the forehead of some of the fish. These are typically males. Although some males do not have the hump, none of the females do.

As far as the electric blues, if it has any color at all, it is a male. The females of the electric blues lack color and are primarily gray with some dark vertical stripes. Many of the peacock species females have no color to ID them and are virtually identical with other peacock species females. Therefore it is not advisable to keep more than one peacock group in a tank. They will interbreed and hybridize producing fish that nobody wants because they are not a true strain.
You are speaking of the sex dots on the bottom fins of cichlids. If they have these couple round dots on their bottom fin near where they poop---they are MALE fish. The female has less dots, or none at all! When ciclids breed, the female (with no dots) lays her eggs and she immediately scoops them into her mouth to incubate them there. When she sees the dots, which look like her own eggs, onn the males fin, she attempts to put them in her mouth. The male, at that time ';fertalizes'; the eggs she is holding IN her mouth, where they will hatch, and then swim free from the mothers mouth after several weeks of being in there. She does not eat during this time. And so..The Male cichlid HAS dots on the bottom fin--The female, does not! Hope this helps you. Also, your electric blue cichlid is a very fierce and aggresive fish, he will likely kill the other fish if left in there together, especially as he gets older. good luck. These cichlids actually prefer alcaline hard water right from your sink. You need only remove the chlorine--and use no other water treatments. They can easily live for 10 years or more. As they mature, they prefer to OWN their tank, and are seldom willing to share it with another fish of ANY kind. Living alnoe in their tank--YOU will become the focus of their attention, and they will them watch and follow your every move as you go about the room. They are wonder brilliant, hardy, and very long lived fish. But they prefer to be alone and OWN their tank, for they are very possesive and territorial. The electric blue you have is one of the most beautiful and colorful fish available. But they will eventually fight to the death--any other fish in there. Even the female must be removed after mating for they will fight, and he will destroy the youngs as they are birthed from the mothers mouth. Good luck!
Your fish have a disease called ick.

Get a medicine called quick cure from your local pet store.

when treating fish remove carbon from filter it will turn your water blue so remove any decorations.

It worked for me i wish you the same luck.

It's up to you -- you might just tell them that when Mommies and Daddies love each other very much, sometimes a Daddy will give a Mommy a very special hug, and he will plant a seed in the Mommy's tummy that grows into a baby. If you are one of those parents that believes in using the appropriate words for everything, you can use all the correct terminology instead of saying ';very special hug';. It's really up to you to decide what works with your parenting style and how much your kids can understand at this point.

What is the origin of ';the birds and the bees';?

The phrase is said to have its origins in a folk tale, whose exact source is unknown, that reportedly became popular in Southern Africa (probably Namibia) around the turn of the last century. It tells the story of a colony of bee-eater (Merops pusillus) birds laying their eggs after a meal of honeybees.

I'm twenty years old and I don't need a birds and the bees talk, but I never got one when I was young. I was wondering where the metaphor for birds and bees and sex came from. If you know, let me in on the secret here cause I can not see it.Birds and the Bees?

How do you get rid of a Bee hive under the ground.?

Spray during the evening hours while they are much less active 2 nights in a row from a distance (however far the spray will go). Then on the 3rd evening, pour a decent amount of gasoline or lighter fluid into the nest's hole and around the opening and light it to burn the remainder. Please,... if you do decide to burn them out you must make sure that the nest isn't near any buildings or brush that can catch fire,... and do not let the fire out of your sight until it has gone out. If you can't burn them out,... just get closer to the next each evening making sure more of the spray goes into the nest hole. If you sprayed properly the 1st 2 nights from a distance you shouldn't have a problem with getting closer. How do you get rid of a Bee hive under the ground.?
    2 ways

Use Raid Hornet and wasp spray (other brands are available)

This spray shouts a stream, not a spray, . Spray into the hole, The liquid kills on contact and leaves a residue to kill any that touch it later.

Last one that works well if you are close to the house

Connect a garden hose to your hot water tank, and pour this extremely hot water down the hole. Run the hose to the hole and shove it in.How do you get rid of a Bee hive under the ground.?
uhhhh......i'd say stomping on it and spraying it would work nicely (not in that order)

Reagan came along just as the DNC was driving all non-socialists from the Democrat party.

The Republican party was then infested with moderates who were RINOs (a/k/a tax and spend Republicans).

They have hurt the nation by allowing the left wing of the Democrat party to be a legitimate threat to the health of our economy... which is an imediate threat to the health of our country.Did neos infiltrate the repub party like Africanized honey bees are doing here?
Great analogy, they look alot like honey bees like maybe a part of the good team but really they are warmongering Zionists. Wanting to set up colonies where they arent wanted or needed.

Has anyone actually HEARD the birds and the bees?

I mean, was it an actual story that people told, or was it a reel-to-reel film or something?Has anyone actually HEARD the birds and the bees?
As one guy once said, ';Tweet, tweet sing the birdies and bees buzz in the lane, but the facts of their love life is hard to explain';.

There is no actual story of the ';birds and the bees';. It is just a saying that refers to telling someone about sex. Of course if you want more information, you can always see Jerry Seinfeld's ';The Bee Movie'; where the number 1 rule for bees is ';Never Talk to Humans';. That may be why we don't know much about their love life.Has anyone actually HEARD the birds and the bees?
old timers called sex the birds and the bees. I dont know what birds and bees have in common???beats me. You know when someone says i going to tell you about the birds and the bees. Thats them telling you about sex and relationships.
I was never told the birds and the bees.... I just figured it out on my own...
never had to hear it. i learned by myself.
I think Briana nailed it on the head- she is right
I don't think it was an actual story. Just a name like ';Aunt Flow, or On the Rag';. So younger ears wouldn't understand what the older crowd was talking about.

What does 'you are the only bee in my bonnet' mean?

Does it have a good meaning or bad meaning? What does it mean? What does 'you are the only bee in my bonnet' mean?
to have a 'bee in your bonnet' means something is troubling you - an idea is buzzing in your head, so to speak. It usually refers to being obsessed with an idea.

to be the 'only bee in my bonnet', I guess would mean that you are the only person the individual is thinking of. Whether that is in a positive way or not, isn't really apparent. What does 'you are the only bee in my bonnet' mean?
it means your the only person who gets that person uptight and edgy..

so i don't think it's good.. unless it's said in a light fun way
A ';bee in one's bonnet'; is e very pesky problem!
It actually has a bad meaning,,,, it means you are the only problem in my mind...........

Us guys would each swipe our Dads' dirty magazines and swap and discuss them in the woods down the road. This was in the early to mid 1970's.
Yes I do remember... Her name was Mary Jane. I was 10yrs old, she was 13yrs old. She showed me what her older brother was showing her. Being completely naive, I just went along with what she was doing. 'Cuz it felt soooooo good.

I guess it really had nothing to do with the birds and the bees... It was just pure unbridled child lust. I think I was 13 when I found out the reason for it all.
It was all second hand knowledge until I lost my virginity, my college professor explained it all in detail. I never had a one-on-one talk. Wish I did. I had the talk with my oldest son, so he will know about s e x and values.

Needless to say I had a good bath and scrub afterwards and then I met the love of my life and she made everything O.K.!
I was 9, she was 13 and she asked me to give her a whirl. Of course I had no idea what we were doing, but apparently I was old enough to function, and she showed me what to do (so I assume I was not her first).
I am still not exactly clear. In 1969 my nighbor Mark tried to explain the female anatomy to me and my head is still spinning. I wish the other neighbor Donna had tried. I bet she knew more

What is the song Massachusetts by Bee Gees all about and why was it so popular?

    Found it !!!!

    MASSACHUSETTS (1967)

BARRY GIBB: It's basically antiflower power... Don't go to San Francisco, come home... We wanted to write the opposite of what it's like to lose somebody who went to San Francisco. The lights all went out in Massachusetts because everybody went to San Francisco, because they left.

ROBIN GIBB: It is not talking about people going back to Massachusetts. It represents all the people who want to go back to somewhere or something. It is all about people who want to escape. What is the song Massachusetts by Bee Gees all about and why was it so popular?
Who cares, it was a rubbish song! 'Staying Alive' was a much better track. What is the song Massachusetts by Bee Gees all about and why was it so popular?
Because it sold lot records why? I don't know
    because it wasa jazzy
The what? has already been answered.

The why? is because it is well sung in close harmony. Even today those groups who can sing in close harmony get a better response from audiences than those who can merely sing. Also it's written in a minor key, which always has more emotional effect than works written in a major key.
I don't know. But I do know it's rubbish though
Partly it's because American place names are so great. If the song went 'Feel like going back, to Bognor Regis' it probably would not still be about.

  • I wonder that where all the bees go in winter?bears sleep but what bees do?

yes, bears do hibernate in winters they eat all that they can eat... they also eat soil to block their digestive system to go out the other side... but bees are social insects.... they stay in their hives in winter, they dont hibernate, they just stay there and with the helping hands of each be they keep their self warm by clustering their selves together and uses their wings to regulat the temperature inside the hive... same tecnique is used in summer only they dont cluster during this season..I wonder that where all the bees go in winter?bears sleep but what bees do?
they just hide in their hivesI wonder that where all the bees go in winter?bears sleep but what bees do?
They'll need lots of honey in the winter. All of the bees huddle around the Queen bee. Throughout winter, The bees on the outside slowly die off. If the queen bee does not die, They will have a good harvest the next year. And the process repeats itself.

Did Joseph give Jesus the ';birds and the bees'; talk?

Or did he make Mary do it?Did Joseph give Jesus the ';birds and the bees'; talk?
    Yep.

Ol' God could create Jesus, and be behind the cause of the angel that named him, and sacrifice him thus leading to his death, but he couldn't take a few minutes to give Jesus a nice talking to about boyparts and ladybits.

And of course, Mary couldn't do it. She barely got the talk herself; her innocence was probably kind of torn away when she found out she was pregnant as a virgin. Thanks to some nice man in the sky, she would give birth to a the kind of boy that wears pocket protectors, then he dies and people imitate his death with a cross for the next few thousand years, even though he became a zombie, and will supposedly come back to fly everyone to Heaven. I'm hoping the spaceship of choice is a nice ride on Manuels -- nevermind, we'll save this story for another time....

    Anyhow, Mary couldn't do it.

    %26gt;.%26gt;

Joseph had to do it, instead.

:(Did Joseph give Jesus the ';birds and the bees'; talk?
I think Mary and Joseph both told Jesus to ';ask your father'; when that topic came up.

Now when someone says : ';She's got a bee in her bonnet'; That means she's pissed off. It's all in the way it's worded and the tone it is said in.What does 'you are the only bee in my bonnet' mean?
    bad meaning.

Like a bee buzzing continually, it means that he/she is constantly, repeatedly, annoying you, or talking about the same subject over and over again.
A bee in your bonnet is someone who bothers you. It's a bad thing.

Also, someone who keeps at you, someone irritating. Like a bee in your bonnet would be literally.

Well, here's one concept -- audio book link below!! Sometimes it's just easier to hear it. And it's downloadable. Good luck!
It isn't a very long book. It is the story of a young girl who escapes her abusive father to live with three women who farm bees for honey. They take her in and begin to raise her. There are a lot of things that happen and the characters are all very important to the plot. This is too complicated a book to summarize on here. You will have to read it. I read it for fun and I actually liked it. Give it a chance. You may learn something from it about life or yourself.

I live in quebec.where do the bees go in the fall.do they fly south or do they hibernate.?

I think the queen just lays thousands of eggs and they all die, they freeze. But the following Spring all the eggs hatch inculding a new queen...unless she is the only one to somehow survive the winter, not sure. Good question.I live in quebec.where do the bees go in the fall.do they fly south or do they hibernate.?
They live off the honey, that's what they store it for.I live in quebec.where do the bees go in the fall.do they fly south or do they hibernate.?
Bees often will kick out the drone bees at the start of the overwintering process. Then the remaining bees will form a tight cluster and surround and protect the queen until spring. By constantly moving, the bees keep the inside of the hive much wamer than the external temperatures, and they live off of the honey stored in the hive.
Bees hibernate (that's why they have nests and make honey) (genius).

    Why Bees? Whats the point?

Why would a god create a animal that could only protect it's self by killing it's self? Seems kind of illogical. Why Bees? Whats the point?
    Greetings!

Well Professor, I protect my Bees, I like the Honey, they like my Flowers.

    /!\Why Bees? Whats the point?
it's only illogical if you don't know about kin selection and that all worker bees are sterile anyway. In addition bees can protect themselves without any self-inflicted harm against other insects, it's just mammals they have problems with.

It's only illogical if you know nothing about bees apart from how they look like.
That is hardly the only way bees can protect themselves! Do some research on bees, and you will find some amazingly interesting defense mechanisms they possess.

One example? Japanese honeybees, when attacked by a vicious hornet (true bee-killers!) can use their wing muscles in unison to literally BAKE the hornet to death. The bees collective vibration brings the heat of the hive up to 47 degrees - the highest temperature a hornet can withstand without dying is 46 degrees.

    ';I was just wondering what logical would some one use to justify there creation by god.';

Bees play a vital role in the pollination of many types of flora. To simplify - they help certain plants do what they cannot on their own: reproduce.
it is one for the many... one bee will scare of a preditor and die... but that will save thousands more. They work as a colony, all for the same goal. One bee is not as important as the whole hive. Maybe evolution did not 'fix' this problem because the death of a few bees does not diminish the force and longevity of the complete hive AT ALL.

Some stinging insects can sting and live, but the bee evolution just didn't go that way - stinging and living was not necessary for the bee community to continue to continue to exist to this day.

There is no god related justification for bees.... or anything else (possibly ;) for that matter...
I don't know but they are of utter importance in pollination for the crops we depend on for survival. You know, that the bees have disappeared and stopped returning to hives (nobody really knows why), so farmers actually rent bee hives to help pollinate their crops?
It's designed to protect the greater commune..the hive. It will sacrifice itself to deter a real threat.....

However, I do read into this question. You are asking why a religious person would kill themselves to protect their faith?...or is that too deep?
That brings the same question as well; Why Muslims?

    Same reasoning.

    Aha, had to say it.

    Anyways, the common Christian response is ';It's in God's plan';

My response is ';He didn't, and couldn't have'; ;)
without bees some plants don't get pollinated.

  • What causes you more concern: Bee colony collapse or the GM bankruptcy?

Please explain why. What causes you more concern: Bee colony collapse or the GM bankruptcy?
The collapse of the bee colony can have long term effects on our environment. GM...if they are smart and I am sure they are, can use their bankruptcy to change the direction of their company to fit the needs of those demanding alternative transportation that does not rely heavily on oil. What causes you more concern: Bee colony collapse or the GM bankruptcy?
The Bee colony it's by far more important. Bees are essential for pollination of plants, especially for those that produce our food. The bankruptcy of GM it's avoidable but they want to scare us. Any thinking person is able to realize that all GM has to do is to change their production to smaller more efficient cars, but they just want to keep making SUVs and Hummers for their own gain. They don't care about the environment, the gas prices, and much less about the consumers...
It's a no-brainer.If the bee colonies disappear, the worlds food source disappears- this issue is flying under the radar, for now, but it will be world news shortly. We should be investing millions on this problem to find out the solution to it. But instead we give billions in tax breaks to oil companies, which are making record profits- It seems our leaders are leading us down the road to disaster.
They are both terrifying!! At least there's something we can do about GM - protest and destroy - but what can we do about the bees?

Hang on - by GM Bankruptcy I thought you were referring to the moral bankruptcy of Monsanto pushing GM crops - but now I wonder if you are...
    Bee colony collapse.

Most of our food depends on bees to spread and grow, and we need honey.

Without the bees, we'll lose some of the food we have and we'll collapse.
If we had a world wide bee colony collapse the GM issue wouldn't even figure! We would have very little food so wouldn't be worrying about world finance!
I am not concerned with either.

When that bee lands on a girl flower, little flowers are conceived.

    Birds!

Birds are nice because they don't include a graphic description of giving birth!

When a boy bird begins dating a girl bird and they are very very much in love, after they got married on a non denomination church, they start rubbing their little beaks together.

And by jumping on the girl bird's back while making weird noises and flapping his wings like there's no tomorrow, boy bird begins the process of ordering some baby birds.

After a certain period of time in which the girl bird thinks what the hell has she done with her life, she lays an egg.

    And THAT has to hurt!

When that egg is hatched, we have a new baby bird!

    Discovery Channel, beat this!
According to that story the birds are like women and the bees like men: Birds are free to fly wherever they like, but bees are enslaved to a single queen their entire life and their whole life is dedicated to keeping her alive. Bees pollinate flowers, birds spread the seed, men impregnate eggs, women give birth. Sex is key for survival of both.

    how's this?
IM AFRAID THAT THE BIRDS AND BEES QUESTION IS RATHER SIMPLE IN AFFECT.... BIRDS PECK AND BEES STING !
The 'Birds and bees' is a story sometimes told to children in an attempt to explain sexual intercourse.

According to that story the birds are like women and the bees like men:

Birds are free to fly wherever they like, but bees are enslaved to a single queen (or nagging woman) their entire life and their whole life is dedicated to keeping her alive (Groan). Bees pollinate flowers, birds spread the seed, men impregnate eggs, women give birth.
    An old song says:-

'Birds do it, bees do it.........

let's do it, let's fall in love'
It's time to talk about the birds and the bees.

No, I don't mean sex. You've already heard that story: Boy meets girl, sperm meets egg, a baby grows in mommy's tummy. That's the way of all flesh. Or so you were told.

Well, you know how it is with the stories we tell kids. We leave a few things out. The truth about babies is that sometimes, there's no sperm. There's just an egg, but a baby hatches anyway. Many bees don't have daddies. Neither do some birds. It's called parthenogenesis鈥攍iterally, virgin birth. We're finding more and more animals that can reproduce this way, and we're learning how to engineer it in others. We're even tinkering with mommy-daddy procreation in humans.
its a saying to express about the term sex its universal all around

How do I keep the bee's away from my water fountain ?

If they're honey bees, leave them alone, bees are disappearing for some unknown cause and need all the help we can give them. If on the other hand they are hornets, you have my permission to hunt down their nest and nuke them any way you see fit. Whether bee or hornet you can minimize their presence by moving the fountain or supplying other water sources in out of the way spots in the garden. Do not poison the water, cats, birds , butterflies and other benign critters rely on it for water. RScottHow do I keep the bee's away from my water fountain ?
there are small electronic devices that emit high distorting frequency that can be recognized by insects like bees. these devices act on repeling insects away from the place.

Not knowing where you reside, your best bet is to get hooked up with any of the closest Universities that offer courses in apiculture. Having found them, what you are looking for is any text that is dated no earlier than this year. The reason is the changes in culture due to CCD, which seems to be mainly a problem in the methods used in the rearing of bees. Latest research seems to indicate that the symptoms are related to practices, namely materials used to keep hives clean, and the development of large sized strains of the insect, as well as stresses put on them to work and travel. I have not been up on the most recent but I can tell you that all best management practices have been revised over the last year. Best thing to do is take a course and most Universities now offer them on line with books available threw the mail. Check with their agricultural studies departments (at UMASS here it is Plant and Soil Sciences Dept.)
I had to laugh when I read your question. I'm afraid there is not ';best overall'; book on bees. It rather depends on how, where, and why you want to keep bees.

By the way just to let you know, being an bee keeping is the SECOND MOST WRITTEN ABOUT TOPIC IN THE WORLD. The first is of course religion. There are more books to choosefrom on the subject of bees than any other topic, except religion.

I own about 50 books on bees myself. One was written in the 1700's. Most are much more modern than that one, dating from the 1920's, forward.

I hate to say it, but even the very old books can give you wonderful insites, and lost knowledge on how things were done before the modern hives, and certainly before all the drugs were used on bees.

Countryside And Small Stock Journal (a magazine) just ran a serries of well written articles in their magazines last year. Tons of usefull information there, and resources for books, and places to buy supplies for the apiarist in the articles also. You can buy back copies of the magazine if you wish.

Find a yahoo group on bee keeping also, and join them. Books can teach you tons....humans who have ';been there, done that, got the T-shirt'; can teach you more.

Do bees hum because they forgot the words?

    LOL!!! VERY GOOD

(Incase you are serious(which I sincerely hope not)... the hum is the sound of their wings.)Do bees hum because they forgot the words?
That is soo cute, no they buzz cuase they are buzzzy workers.Do bees hum because they forgot the words?
Hmmm. I never thought of it this way. Yea, it must be the reason.
The humming is actually from the rapid flapping of their wings.
    That's funny
no hardly they make that noise because of there wings
They don't hum, they play the kazoo!
They hum because it is distracting to sing while they are flying.
nope the buzz in order to get their mate, it also helps them to gather nectar from flowers.
Bees humming? They buzz, but if they did hum, then yes, I assume that would be a good reason for them to do so.
They never learned them in the first place.
Bees do not need words. They dance to say things, like ';Long live the Queen';.
they hum because they can't sing.
    Bees don't hum, they buzz.
no cuase they don't have a tongue
    Bless! Forgetful little bees!
    they buzz
No they do it purely to annoy you.
yes they can't remember any of the words they used to know many years ago
bees dont really hum the sound they make is a buzzing sound that comes from their wings thats how it buzzes
yes! and they sting because they forgot to put on sunscreen. silly little bees.
