What have the birds and the bees ever had to do with sex?

Birds always seem to have elaborate mating and child-care habits. For example, many females judge a male based on his call and on the performance of an elaborate dance that exhibits his fitness to pass on genes. Also, birds always have nests right around spring, and it's easy for kids to see these nests - so they'd probably wonder where the baby birds come from.

As for bees: the above answer sounds good. It also creates a pleasing repetition of 'b' which is in itself a rewarding consonant. What have the birds and the bees ever had to do with sex?
